Power Surges and Sags
Spikes:
Power spikes happen every day, many times a day. Most are not even noticable - to you and I - but the computer is very sensitive to changes in voltage. Even if these changes are minor, over time they can take their toll and cause the power supply in the computer to weaken and fail. Many times this also damages other components in the computer.
Of course some spikes are noticable - like lightning strikes. These can be devastating to your computer (and your data) if you do not have the proper power protection.
Sags:
Power sags, or drops in voltage, also happen many times every day, and can have much the same effect as spikes.
Proper Protection:
To properly protect against both spikes and sags you need a good surge suppressor with battery backup. Don't forget to also run your phone line or ethernet cable through the unit because otherwise this is a direct line into your computer for lightning to travel.
My house took a direct lightning strike once while I was working at my computer. It knocked one of the wall outlets right out of the wall (I wish I had thought to get pictures of it before I replaced it). My computer was connected to a TrippLite battery backup and surge suppressor and received no damage whatsoever. Of course results may vary, but you get the idea.
