Get rid of orphaned items in Add and Remove Programs
A word of caution: These instructions involve editing the registry. If you make a mistake editing the registry it could cause Windows to not even load. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, please call the professionals at CCS.
Sometimes an item will show up in the Add and Remove Programs list, but when you try to remove that program from the system you get an error and that item stays in the list. The following instructions will help you to remove such orphaned items.
- 1. Create a Restore Point (just in case ...)
- 2. Click Start then Run...
- 3. Type in the word regedit and click OK.
- 4. Navigate to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall key
- 5. Click the top folder under this key and note the DisplayName in the right pane
- 6. Continue until you find the name of the program you want to remove
- 7. Delete that folder (the one you have selected with the appropriate DisplayName)
